That's the kind of joy that the Lord can bring you. Unspeakable Joy.
The kind of joy that a six year old has when they see a jumpy house. The kind of joy that a sixteen year old has when they're able to drive by themselves for the first time. The kind of joy that you are filled with when you receive an unexpected gift. The kind of joy that a boy has after being away from his girl for too long. The kind of joy that jumping in a cold pool after a hot day brings. The kind of joy that the mention of ice cream still brings me (So. Much. Joy.)
The kind of joy that you can't even begin to put into words.
My time in Honduras taught me how to live a true joy- filled life. These people had nothing at all, but even in the hardest of times, they still smiled. They still laughed. They still loved.
In our down time, between activities, I loved watching the children just run around and play. They didn't have electronics. They didn't have 20 toy cars. They didn't have barbie dolls. They didn't have basketballs or baseballs. But you know what they did have? EACH OTHER! and man, they found so much joy in that. They would run, laugh, play tag, wrestle, sit and talk, and then laugh some more! No, I never really understood what they were saying because I don't speak any Spanish, but I didn't have to know. I didn't doubt for a second that they weren't having a good time.
This poor country was full of such genuine people who were so good at building relationships and appreciating the small things. They may not have had anything to give, but they showed their love by welcoming in foreign strangers with their heartwarming smiles.
On the last day, the workers at the Hope Center told us that they considered us family, and continuously expressed how grateful they were for the time we spent with them. They welcomed us into their homes with open arms, expecting the Lord to do something amazing!
Did you know that God can bring this kind of joy into your life? No matter what it is that you're going though!
There will be times when we feel like it's impossible to be happy:
"There on the poplars we hung our harps, for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land?" Psalm 137:2-4.
However, joy isn't dependent upon the circumstances we are in:
"For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord. Hear my voice when I call, Lord; be merciful to me and answer me." Psalm 27:5-7
God is the giver of a greater joy, and with the Lord as your savior, YOU too can be comforted during the hard times, the good times, and in the unknown.
Joy is setting the soul upon the top of a pinnacle; it is the cream of the sincere milk of the Word. Spiritual joy is a sweet and delightful passion, arising from the apprehension and feeling of some good, whereby the soul is supported under present troubles and fenced against future fear. – Patti M. Hummel, Glorifying God
"Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” Matthew 13:44. Man was able to sell all he had with JOY because he found something worth losing everything else for. Jesus is worth losing everything for!!! If we walk away from the Lord, we are walking away from all of the treasures that are waiting for us in Heaven!
"You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." Psalm 16:11
"Through the victories you gave, his glory is great; you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty. Surely you have granted him unending blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence. For the king trusts in the Lord; through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken" Psalm 21:5-7
"Consider it nothing but joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials. Be assured that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed, lacking in nothing." James 1:2-4
"Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet." Psalm 47:1-3
